Rafael Nadal will not feature in 2012 Davis Cup – Tennis News
World number two, Rafael Nadal has decided to take a break from Davis Cup duties in 2012 and allow the youngsters to step up and take charge to represent Spain in the Davis Cup ties against competing nations. This decision was
taken right after Spain’s recent triumph in the Davis Cup this year, defeating the Argentine team at their soil Seville. Rafael Nadal lead his troops and made sure there were no slipups at all.
This year Davis Cup victory was the fifth for Spanish team in past eleven years that shows that they are leading the world of tennis by grooming talented youngsters that compete at world class levels. Nadal’s decision of non-qualification
will provide a golden opportunity for the young talent to step up and prove their worth to the crowd.
Spanish number one had an impressive season this year as he managed to clinch yet another Grand Slam title at Roland Garros French Open. He reached six major tournament finals but was overpowered by the reigning world number one,
Novak Djokovic. It might be a bit frustrating to get beaten by the same man but still it doesn’t ruin the overall performance of Nadal throughout the year.
He jumped into the Barclays ATP Tour Finals with massive enthusiasm to dethrone his two arch rivals, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, to seal his first year-end finale triumph but injury didn’t helped his cause and he fought through
pain and felt short of the expectations of his fans.
Spaniard did well to recover from the injury before the Davis Cup tie and managed to bounce back a set down against his opponent, Juan Martin del Potro, to ensure fifth Davis Cup crown for Spain on Sunday 4th December.
On his announcement about his non-participation in the next year Davis Cup tournament, Nadal said, “Next year I will not play. It's an Olympic year. For many years, I have been one of the players that play the highest number of
matches and I don't want to overplay. I want a coherent calendar. So, next year, my participation in the Davis Cup is impossible. Then we will think about the future."
Nadal has never lost a match in Davis Cup except just one defeat on his debut in 2004 when he was just 17-years-old. It will be a great blow for the Spanish team to lose such an outstanding performer but it will definitely open
up the route for more teenagers to represent their country on an elite platform.
