Rafael Nadal withdraws from Rogers Cup due to prevailing knee injury – Tennis News
World number three, Rafael Nadal, has finally made the announcement that he would not be taking part in the Roger Cup. The event, which is also called the Toronto Masters, is one of the nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events in
the tennis calendar.
Nadal wrote on his Twitter account, "Hi all, wanted to let you know that I won't be playing Toronto this year. I am not ready to play and I hope to be back in 2014 at that great tournament that has always treat me very well. I
am continuing with my recup and practice. Thanks!"
The Spanish number one is a two time former champion of Rogers Cup. Playing in Toronto for the second time in his career, he defeated USA’s former world number one, Andre Agassi, in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the final to win
his maiden title here. After a gap of two years, Nadal captured his second Rogers Cup crown by beating Nicolas Kiefer of Germany in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
The Mallorca resident did not give a good performance during his last appearance, as he got stunned by the then world number 41 from Croatia, Ivan Dodig, in three sets 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-7(5) in the second round.
Nadal added in another statement, "Coming to Toronto is always one of the highlights of my season so I'm very disappointed that I can't play there this year. I was planning on coming to Toronto and did everything I could to be
ready but I still need some more time to recover."
The Spaniard’s knees, which have troubled him throughout his career, started to cause pain once again in this season. Nadal was looking good, as he defeated the number one player at that time, Novak Djokovic, in four sets in the
French Open final to win his 11th Grand Slam title in June.
However, he was stunned by Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarter-finals of the Gerry Weber Open after few days. Featuring at the third Grand Slam of the season, Nadal was then upset by Lukas Rosol in five sets in the second
round of Wimbledon Championships.
Later on, Nadal announced that he was suffering from the niggling knee injury once again. The former world number one also withdrew from the London Olympics, where he was supposed to defend his title that he had won in Beijing
four years ago.
