Rafael Nadal withdraws from Spain versus USA Davis Cup tie – Tennis News
World number 1 Rafael Nadal has announced that he would skip Spain versus USA Davis Cup, World Group quarterfinal tie in Austin, Texas in the second week of July.
Nadal has blamed ITF for making a hectic schedule which has resulted in his withdrawal from the crucial Davis Cup tie. According to the Spaniard the problem is with the governing body as they do not do anything. He said that many
of the best tennis players continue to skip Davis Cup due to its tough schedule but ITF does nothing and only knows how to make money.
ITF has scheduled Davis Cup right between Wimbledon and the US Open from 8-10 July. Nadal is currently defending his Wimbledon title in London. Wimbledon’s title match is scheduled on the 3rd July and Nadal is expected
to qualify for that. The US Open is scheduled to be held from 29th August to 11th September.
Announcing his withdrawal, Nadal said, "I cannot be competitive every week of the year. My body needs to rest. Seriously, it's not possible be No. 1 or No. 2 playing Davis Cup every tie, be in all the places, be competitive in
all the tournaments. So for that reason I cannot be there. For me it's tough. But for the ITF, doesn't matter."
Nadal said that he needs a rest of fifteen to twenty days after finishing the first part of the season. The Spaniard added that he has to have a check up on his knees and get ready for the second part of the season. The ten time
grand slam champion will be defending his title and 2000 ranking points at the US Open.
The left-hander said, “I should have a check-up on my knees, and see how everything is going with the treatment we did, which is what has allowed me to carry on. The idea is to do what I did in 2010 to arrive the same or even better
prepared for the US Open.”
It is pertinent to mention that the Spaniard has always given importance to play for his country. Nadal was victorious in both of his single matches at the Spain versus Belgium first round tie in March. Spain won the contest 4-1.
Back in 2004, Nadal became the youngest player to win a match for the victorious team in the final of the Davis Cup, when he defeated Andy Roddick in four sets 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
After the Mallorca resident’s withdrawal, David Ferrer will spearhead Spain’s campaign against the Americans. Fernando Verdasco, Feliciano Lopez and Marcel Granollers will complete the line up for the four time Davis Cup champions.
