Rafael Nadal withdraws from the US Open – Tennis News
Former world number one, Rafael Nadal announced his withdrew from the US Open on Wednesday. The Spaniard has not contested in any major tournaments this season, since his upset to the unseeded Lukas Rosol at the Wimbledon
Championships held in late June.
Talking to media, Nadal told his fans, “I am very sad to announce that I am not ready to play the US Open in NY. Thanks to my fans for their support and specially, the New Yorkers.”
The Spanish professional’s absence from the court has bought his current years career at halt. He is the 11-time Grand Slam title bearer, with seven times on red clay of the French Open Championships and hence is known as
the “king of clay”. Critics believe that Nadal suffered this major injury due to his aggressive playing style, as it added a great toll on his knees during excessive running in the matches.
Director of the US Open Championships, David Brewer, told the media, “Rafa has informed us that he will not be ready to compete at the U.S. Open this year and has withdrawn from the tournament. We hope to see him back on
the court soon and look forward to his return to New York next year.”
However, the world number three will surely take time to return to his prime form once returning to the professional circuit. He will be contesting against the reigning world champion, Roger Federer, who has participated in every Grand Slam championship ever
since the year 2000.
The Spaniard exhibited a classic run of form earlier this season. He reached to the final of the 2012 Australian Open, only to be defeated in a record thriller against the Serb, Djokovic. Later, he bagged home the next three
clay court tournament titles.
His withdrawal has surely worked for the advantage of the other top contenders of the number one rank. The former world number one Novak Djokovic, who is five-time US Open title bearer, is currently ready to grab any possible
chance to the top spot. Lastly is the British number one, Andy Murray, who recently secured the gold medal in men’s singles category at the London Olympics.
Nevertheless, Nadal’s unmatchable strength lies in his game style. He can surely gain the number one spot, as soon as he recovers from his pain-shaken wounds. The Spaniard has proven that he can not only compete with the
champions but also beat them at will.
