Rafael Soriano blows save as New York Yankees lose to Toronto Blue Jays 7-8 – MLB Update
New York Yankees will be disgusted after losing to Toronto Blue Jays 7-8 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Monday, August 27 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Considering Blue Jays’ recent form, New York Yankees were the clear favourites to emerge victorious but the Blue Jays showed super fighting abilities to clinch a thriller on Monday. Manager Joe Girardi also looked very upset at the result of the game.
Starting pitcher David Phelps had an ordinary time on the mound as he gave up four runs on five hits in six plus innings while striking-out seven batters. Relief pitcher Rafael Soriano, who has produced a number of match winning performances this season,
could not live up to the expectations on Monday, giving up a three run home-run in the ninth. Derek Lowe took his 11th loss of the season after allowing the tie breaking run in the extra inning.
"He's been so good for us," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said of Rafael Soriano. "He's done a great job. Just tonight wasn't his night."
Robinson Cano homered twice to give Yankees an early advantage. Nick Swisher and Derek Jeter also smacked home-runs but the Blue Jays were too hot to handle in the opener.
"It's very frustrating," Yankees’ Mark Teixeira said. "We've had our share of bad luck, as most teams in baseball have. We'll have guys step up."
"When you come here to play in Yankee Stadium, man, anything can happen. I think everybody knows that," Blue Jays reliever Darren Oliver said after grabbing his third win of the season. We've got like the MASH unit right now. It's crazy.”
Yankees will be looking to win more often than not to avoid losing their first place on the American League East Division standings table. The likes of Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays are working hard to get back into the playoff race. It will be interesting
to see if Joe Girardi and company can put things back on track in Game 2 to keep the series alive.
