Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Rafael van der Vaart’s age-old rivalry dating back to over half a decade has been reignited once again and the Tottenham Hotspur talismanic midfielder wants to get even with the Swedish striker of AC Milan.
The duo, who used to be teammates at Ajax, were set to face each other in the UEFA Champions League fixture at San Siro.
The rivalry started back in 2004 when Ibrahimovic injured Rafael van der Vaart with a rigorous tackle during an international friendly.
Van der Vaart, who has been a revelation at White Hart Lane since his arrival from Real Madrid, has admitted that he wants revenge on his former Ajax teammate.
The Dutch midfielder said, “First of all I want to win. Second, I want to play the ball between Zlatan's legs. That would be a very nice bonus.”
But Ibrahimovic responded and said that he does not think about the past and getting to the next round of the Champions League was his foremost priority.
Moreover, the goalscoring machine of AC Milan has also revealed that Manchester City wanted to sign him but he snubbed the English Premier League outfit and claimed that he is not the player who plays for only money.
Ibrahimovic said, “I had a couple of talks with City and they had a fantastic project going on but I'm not one of those players who wants to go there and play for money. For me, it's important to see what kind of future there is, what kind of possibilities
there is. For me, the project of City is not now.”
The Manchester club were heavily linked with the then-Barcelona striker and were willing to pay a record-breaking transfer fee in order to attain the services of the Swedish striker.
However, Ibrahimovic opted to join AC Milan as he thinks the Rossoneri are a bigger club than Manchester City at the moment.
