Rafael van der Vaart urges Tottenham to prove their worth against Inter Milan
Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has backed his team to perform against Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, 2 November.
Harry Redknapp's side trail leaders Inter by three points in Group A ahead of their game at London's White Hart Lane.
"These are the games when the spotlight is on you as individuals to produce and it is on this stage that we must perform to show our entitlement to be there," van der Vaart said. "No it won’t be easy, how can it be? This is Inter Milan in the Champions League.
But we have shown our fighting spirit and that anything in football is possible if you have the belief to make it happen."
The Dutchman, who signed for Spurs on the last day of the transfer window in August, was suspended when Spurs lost 4–3 to Inter after being reduced to ten men on 20 October.
Despite the defeat, the 27-year-old said there are positive aspects for his team to draw from — not least Gareth Bale's hat-trick after the interval.
"We had the momentum towards the end and we have to maintain that outlook from the start in front of our own fans. Big players love big games and we have to show that we have that quality."
Sneijder a threat to the Spurs defence
Wesley Sneijder, van der Vaart's compatriot and former teammate at Ajax Amsterdam and at Real Madrid, has been Inter's key player going forward since he joined the team last summer.
"He’s a player we have to contain because he’s their inspiration in midfield," van der Vaart said of Sneijder. "It’s true they have many good players, but we have to make them worry about us and ensure that this game is dictated by what we do. We showed
Inter what we’re about in the second half at San Siro, now we have to believe that we can do it again."
