Ragna Ingolfsdottir wins Women’s Singles crown in the Iceland International 2011 – Badminton news
Iceland’s ace shuttler Ragna Ingolfsdottir wins her first international title of the current year as she has bagged the Women’s Singles crown in the Iceland International 2011, on Sunday, November 13, in Iceland. She defeated Lithuania’s Akvile Stapusaityte
in the final of the event.
Ingolfsdottir, who is currently placed at number 65 in the Women’s Singles world rankings, played her best badminton to chuck out her compatriot in a rubber-set match which lasted for 50 minutes. The higher ranked Ingolfsdottir showed her class and bagged
the gold medal with a wonderful performance.
In the opening set, Ingolfsdottir opened the game with a stunning speed as she quickly established her grip over the pace of the game. Her smooth movement in all areas of the court helped her in executing strokes perfectly wherever she wanted. Until the
interval in the opening game, she was leading with a margin of 11-8.
Stapusaityte accelerated her speed in the second half of the game and drew near to her opponent by reaching at 14-15. However, the top seed increased her speed in the concluding phase of the opening set and finished it off with a margin of 21-18, in 18 minutes.
In the second set of the match, Ingolfsdottir played with aggression as she was hitting the bird hard to put more pressure on her opponent. But Stapusaityte was ready this time as she also played with the equal speed and remained positive in the whole set.
The local shuttler made a few mistakes in the ending phase of the game and lost it in 16 minutes with a margin of 17-21.
The match turned into an interesting fight in the final set when both ladies remained toe-to-toe in the whole first half. However, Ingolfsdottir injected power and speed in her strokes and became quicker in all areas of the court. She showed no mercy in
the concluding phase of the second game and won it with a margin of 21-17 in 16 minutes.
The Women’s Singles final match ended up in 50 minutes with the victory of Ingolfsdottir, who finished off the battle with a margin of 21-18, 17-21 and 21-17.
