In a recently released book, 'Rahul Dravid - Timeless Steel', the former Aussie great mentioned that the Indian captain did not enjoy support from the other major players, which led to his downfall as the skipper.
Chappell thinks that the top-order batsman was a thorough professional, who had the brain to become the greatest Indian captain; however, that potential remained unfulfilled.
“Some individuals felt threatened by the new world order and appeared to work against Rahul. Had he been given the same wholehearted support in the role that he had given others, I think the recent history of Indian cricket may have been very different and
he could have gone on to become the most successful Indian captain ever," he stated.
The legendary batsman, who was known as the ‘wall of India’ retired from the game earlier this year after India’s dismal performances against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746. Many cricket analysts believe that he could have carried on for some more time but the veteran
opted against it.
The former cricketer also mentioned some of the significant achievements of Dravid as a captain.
Chappell expressed, “Under his leadership, India won nine ODIs in a row against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 and England, and went on to complete a world record of 17 consecutive wins batting second."
The 39-year-old led http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rajasthan-c837 Royals in the fifth season of the Indian Premier League, although he has retired from the global arena. It remains to be seen whether Dravid makes himself available for the next edition of the cash-rich league or not.
