Pune Warriors’ leg spinner, Rahul Sharma, is playing the IPL-4 and impressing his fans despite having Bell’s palsy, a severe facial paralysis disease.
He has to cheer up and shout in spite of the pain he often feels when his face gets paralyzed temporarily while bowling.
With 14 wickets in 11 games and an economy rate of 5.24, Sharma poses to be the highest wicket taker of his team and is ranked 5th overall in this tournament.
In the third edition of the tournament, he played for Deccan Chargers but he lost his vision due to the facial nerve dysfunction.
However, his regained the vision after treatment but the disease stuck with him. The bowler is still fighting with uneasiness to play well.
Talking about the origin of his disease, he tells, “I woke up one morning (in 2010) and felt very numb on the right side. I was shocked. My mother started crying immediately after hearing this. I was very scared…did not know what had happened.”
Despite doctors’ advices to take rest, Sharma is playing with full confidence and courage. He thinks that the disease cannot dent his skills and prevent him from coming on field. He says, “At first, the doctor advised me complete rest. I told him that I
have to play come what may.”
Sharma came into limelight after bowling out the Indian batting pundit, Sachin Tendulkar, in the 21st game of this tournament against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Indians on April 20.
Commenting on his marvellous performance, Sharma says, “I did not think I would do so well in the tournament.” He further tells, “I am happy the way things have panned out so far.”
The 24-year-old bowler holds good name and fame in the Indian domestic circuit. In his 25 T20 games so far, he has 27 wickets with an excellent average of 20.77.
Some cricket experts suggest that the illness may halt the talented youngster’s career but they also believe that if he overcomes this problem, he can be one of the best bowlers of the limited over game.
Sharma is also hopeful that he will soon get rid of the disease and advance his career with full fervour and passion in order to touch the peak of success.
