Raiders to consider Green Bay Packers’ coaches for head coach slot – NFL News Update
The news circulation from the Oakland Raiders' team is that the Raiders are viewing assistant coaches of Green Bay Packers as possible contenders for their vacant head coach position.
Raiders have been looking for a head coach ever since new general manager, Reggie McKenzie took over.
The former director of football operations for Green Bay Packers, Reggie McKenzie immediately had the then head coach, Hue Jackson sacked.
It was a bold move in which McKenzie sought to assert himself and demonstrated his desire to bring in his own man as the coach. That is exactly what Jackson said after being fired.
The position that McKenzie seems to enjoy with Raiders’ owner, Mark Davis, suggests that if the GM wants to have his own man, he willl surely have his way with it.
McKenzie has been with the Green bay Packers for 18 years and the close relationship that he enjoys with the Packers’ coaches suggests that one of them could possibly be hired.
Recently after the postseason loss to the New York Giants, four Packers’ coaches have become potential candidates for the head coach slot and news circulating around suggests that they would be interviewed by Oakland Raiders.
Though a strong candidate for the position appears to be Todd Bowles, yet McKenzie has had an eye on the Packers from the beginning.
Todd Bowles was appointed as the interim coach of the Miami Dolphins after Tony Sparano was fired, following the elimination of the Dolphins from the playoffs.
Bowles led his team by 2-1 in the last three games he coached, thereby strengthening his position as a head coach.
Being a defence specialist and bearing a defensive mind is what makes Bowles attractive to McKenzie.
However, McKenzie will certainly not miss the opportunity of interviewing his former colleagues for the open slot.
Among the list of potential Packers’ candidates are Joe Philbin, Winston Moss, Dom Capers and Tom Clements.
All four assistant coaches have become available after their team’s loss to the Giants and are available to be interviewed.
McKenzie had earlier stated that it was time for a change in the Raiders’ team and talked of a new “era”. He has also stated his desire to reorganise the team according to the Packers’ model.
This makes Packers’ coaches strong candidates for the Raiders’ head coach position.
However, keeping in mind that the Raiders' defence needs the most attention after having come up with the worst performance this season, it seems viable that Bowles may eventually be brought in.
Although McKenzie had made it clear that the offensive or defensive requirements of the team will have no impact on the selection of the head coach, this fact remains to be favouring a defensive specialist like Bowles.
Meanwhile, Raiders have not come up with any announcement regarding the candidates who will be interviewed and a statement in this regard is still pending.
