Rail card and cost?

I'm travelling into London and will need to use the Underground aswell as the train. Then I am returning on a different date.

What's the best ticket/travel card etc to get and roughly how much will it cost me? Should I buy one ticket for the whole time I am away or purchase 2 different tickets on the 2 different days?

I will have to buy it at the staion cos no time to do it online now.

Thanks

  1. You don't say where you are travelling from, but it's really irrelevant as you are staying in London for more than one day. My local company, Southern, does day returns to London with a one day travel card tagged on. That sort of thing is no good fror you, however.. It's not always to late to book on line, you know. Some companies allow you to book and collect the ticket from the smart machine at the station. I've certainly done that the day before travel. I would certainly look on line and check whether two singles are better than a return. The answer which suggest that these are always more expensive is wrong - and probably comes from abroad. For London, why not buy an Oyster Card when you get there, putting as much credit on as you think you will need for your stay?

  2. Not knowing where you are travelling from is a big issue here, but you will most likely have to purchase seperate tickets for train and underground.

  3. call national rail

  4. Lots of variables here, but one rule is its normally always much cheaper to buy a return than 2 singles. Some cities give cheaper rates to the capital than their nearby village & town stations. Youd best contact the booking office beforehand to give them your full details of exactly where from and to & when. (Even which day you go and WHEN you go in the day affects the price!!).

  5. You have a few choices here. I would advise getting a 1 day Travelcard to london, this includes all zones, rail, underground, most bus, tram and DLR services with unlimited use for the day upto 2am in the morning, on the second day you have a choice, if you are making one journey back to the train station and then onwards, then obtain a single ticket to the station and a single ticket back, if you are going to be travelling around in London then another London Travelcard which can be obtained in advance for the day and a Zone 6 single back to your destination.

Another option if you live far enough away a Saver return (if applicable within the ticket restrictions on times etc.) to London and 1 or 2 one day travelcards.

Or A saver return with U1 (single journey within inner London there and back again) and pay independantly for your journeys made.

Or A saver return and obtain a Carnet card from one of the travel centres in London when you are there which gives you 10 discounted journeys on London Transport.

Best thing to do is think how many journeys you are likely to make on London Transport, go to the ticket clerk at your local station and ask for a couple of quotes on tickets and options.

    Good Luck

  6. Sorry no idea about London trains, especially undergroud...scarey place!

Just have a safe journey and enjoy your stay.
