  1. 1 in 1,000 can handle it.

The odds against even getting on are much higher.........

  2. some rr jobs are ok. some work 8 days on and then have 7 off. two weeks off month sounds good. u need to apply at uprr.com

  3. Not all RR jobs are on call 24/7, there are lots of what we call "part time" or 40 hour a week jobs, mechanical, track, clerical depts all have scheduled hours and assigned days off.

Operating department is what the train crews belong to, and even in this department there are a few scheduled jobs but to start with you could expect to be on call pretty much all the time. The better jobs are assigned by seniority so it usually takes awhile to work into.

All the departments have good wage and benefit packages and pay into RR retirement which is a lot better retirement than social security jobs.

As stated it is not for everybody but it's not all that bad.

I like to say it's a good living but not a very good life at times.

If you dont need a regualr schedule and dont mind being flexible it is ok, I would suffocate in a 5 day a week job going to work in the same place each day.

  4. Retirement is not as good as big corporation.

Private pension you can draw SS plus your retirement. Railroad retirement is only a little better than SS.

  5. good money in the operating department ( engineer , conductor) . the hours kind of take some getting used to. on the bnsf it's a real slow year so there not hiring right now, try next year

  6. I applied for the UP (Union Pacific), it's hard to get into, and as some of the other folks here have said you are on call and you work in all weathers, but the $ is real good.  I didn't get on with UP but I got in with the feds, UP was brutally honest about what life would be like on the RR.  It's real physical work, but the bennies and jack is good, but you will have no life out side of work.  Hope this helps

  7. your always on call to go to work at anytime any day , and they run alot of regulations , otherwise its a good job

  8. umm is that the question because it doesn't seem like your asking anything. but rail road jobs are hard if thats what you want to know.
