Question:

Rail system in Tuscany?

I will be in Tuscany in June. I would like to visit many of the popular places like Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Livorno, Siena, Cortuna, etc. Someone suggested we stay in Florence and use the rail system to visit the other towns. (some towns will require transfer from rail to bus).

1) Is the rail system better than driving? And why?

2) Are the towns small enough that we can walk around town? Or would we need a car in these towns?

Does anyone have a better plan as far as getting around?
