Go to AAR.org. Under Railroad Industry you can pull down all types of facts. It list all categories for rail transportation.  Under Railroad Performance Measures you can look at each Class 1 Railroad and pull down charts and graphs on cars on line, average speed, Terminal dwell.  There are also a multitude of Facts about the Railroads.Under Railroad names, BNSF.com, UP.com, CSX.com, NS.com  you can go to Investors facts and develop the analysis for earnings, changes by commodity, etc. Have fun.

1. less pollution than trucks. A train transports more passengers or cargo at less use of fuel than trucks/passenger cars (mostly just one person per car)

2. More reliable (fixed schedules) than road traffic.

3. less dependend on the weather than road (with ice, they can put , if needed sand on the rails by using small tubes going down to the wheels of the engine).

Best: combination of both transports like Roadrailer etc.

Check the pages of both passenger companies (Amtrak or local transport if you are in the US) and cargo companies. They usually put enough stuff into their pages.
