Hi, my husband has been issued with a rail warrant to go on a course with work. How does this work?

  1. The warrant MUST be exchanged for a valid ticket before commencement of travel if the starting station is a manned station i.e. has a ticket office that is open.

If the warrant is for travel from an unmanned station to a manned station with no change of trains (or a change of trains at another unmanned station) then the warrant will be accepted by the conductor for outward travel but should be exchanged for a return portion from the manned station before the return journey,or the conductor may issue valid travel tickets for both directions.

If the warrant is for travel between two unmanned stations the conductor will accept the warrant in both directions or issue valid travel tickets.

If rail travel is required to get to and from the station where the warrant originates and returns to, then a valid ticket must be purchased for these parts of the journey which are not covered by the warrant.

  2. Used them with my work before, take them to ticket office and swap them for a more recognised ticket. But they are accepted with ease

  3. dead easy I issue them all the time at work, just hand over the ticket and tell them where you're going. but it should be written on there.

make sure that you're going from a british rail (or what ever they are now) station as the London Underground can be a pain in the backside, so if you're going into london get a return

  4. Basicly they're like using a cheque.

I use rail warrants all of the time. They're easy to fill in, just make sure you fill the date's and destinations in correctly and you're away. If you read the small print on the back you can also exchange them for food.

Take them to the booking/ticket office and just hand them over, you'll never get any trouble because they are recognised nationwide over the ex BR network. If you require Underground travel or that is an option your ticket will have a small cross next to the destiation, this shows the ticket is valid on LUL services.

If you canot excange your warrant for a ticket, just give it to the gaurd on the train and he will exchange it for tickets for your journey. Also gaurds like to accept warrants as they get commission on them.

    Hope this is of help.

  5. nPractically all the answers are correct, however when we issue tickets for warrant's it is important to bear a number of things in mind

1 Information is taken literally so we don't have to issue the cheapest ticket, we have have to follow the exact information on the warrant

2 You are expected to exchange the warrant at the first opportunity, so if you arrive at your destination you can be penalty fared if not exchanged before  hand

  6. Take it to station and exchange for a ticket

  7. The rail warrent is valid for the cheapest journey between two stations NOT the logical or the most direct route, ie Colchester to Derby via Kings Lynn !
