i currently live in the south of england and during September I need to travel to 12 different destinations all over the uk to get to university open days. is there a particular 'railcard' which I can purchase so that I pay a sum of money and then travel with this- (meaning i won't be paying each individual fare), rather than just a student card where i get a third off fares. please help- im so confused!

  1. To my knowledge there is no such card as you describe. Yes theres the student railcard which you mentioned, and yes the answerer below suggests the Railrover (but it seems an expensive 2 weeks if you just want to check out the open days, and maybe they wont all be within that fortnight you choose). You could try and ask at any ticket office of a staffed rail station, just in case, but I dont hold much hope on this one!

Perhaps to save the most money you should look at long distance coach travel to your open days instead of rail? You might find its cheaper -if not as fast!

  2. An All-Line Rover ticket gives you seven or fourteen days of unlimited travel on the railways. STANDARD CLASS £565 for 14 days.

You can also buy Regional Rover tickets in some parts of the country. They can be used for unlimited travel in a certain area.

  3. There is no ticket like the one you want, the best you can do is get the 16-25 Railcard to get you a discount on the tickets.

  4. The best railcard for your use is the Young Persons Railcard (student card) however if you can find out dates and times of your open days, try also for Advance fares, best if you can to go to the closest rail station and ask the ticket clerk there, who should be able to give you prices, advice and a full print out for each trip, plus inform you which would be cheaper buying an advance or a YP ticket (I am not sure with the new advance system if they still give YP discount on some as well).

The best thing of course is you will easily make your money back on a Young Persons Card for only a few trips and you then have it for a full year to use for any you may make
