Railroaders are a pretty crusty lot and have some uhhhh, "salty" language and expressions. List some of your favorites: one of mine is "that so and so couldn't switch an elephant out of a herd of sheep"

  3. Bob listed the old SP motto ...the uphill slow downhill fast one.

    For the UP i like they couldn't run a toy train around a christmas tree.

    He couldn't switch a tank car out of a string of boxcars

    One i like to wake conductors up is...I have no idea what color that last signal was....do you?

    Arguing with a Dispatcher is like wrestling a pig in the mud. After a while, you realize the pig likes it.

    It would take a shovel to pry that Conductor out of his seat.

    Maintenece of Way Department is called "Maintenence in the Way".

    (Conductor speaking) It was a typical trip with Engineer________.  Spent the whole time having to lie down on the floor and hanging on.

    That last joint was so hard, the couplers are fused together.

    The Brakeman forgot to lace-up a hose. And we spent half an hour dumping air all over the ground.

    1st Railroader; The Company is going to install a Rumor Hotline phone right there on the wall, so we can varify any rumors going around.  They claim that we start and spread rumors all the time.

    2nd Railroader; Yeah, I heard that once.

    Train Master; Please Sir, we do not encourage people riding trains, and this is private property. There's a homeless shelter downtown.

    Man; Hey, I work for this dam railroad!

    Engineer;  The bridge at mile post 57.5 is so old and spindly - I slow down before I get to it - run across the bridge - and if the train makes it over - I jump back on.

  5. Of a Dispatcher:  "He couldn't dispatch two fleas across a dog's butt without puttin' one of 'em in the hole."

    Yard Definition:  "A system of tracks surrounded by a high board fence, inhabited and run by a tribe of natives who refuse to let any trains enter or depart."

    On air brakes:  "He thinks 'quick service' is a drive-in cat-house."

    And my personal favorite:  "Up-hill slow, down-hill fast, tonnage first and safety last."
