Rain Abandons second day’s play – Cricket News Roundup – Part 1 – July 9, 2012
No play was possible on the second day of the third and final Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan as rain again came to halt the proceedings at Pallekele.
The threat of poor weather has been evident throughout the series and despite having clear skies in the morning, play was eventually abandoned for the day after an inspection done by the umpires. Day 3 will start 15 minutes earlier than normal.
Honours were even on the opening day after Sri Lanka were restricted to 44 for 3 in reply to Pakistan’s 226 all out. The Lankans currently lead the series 1-0 after winning the first game.
Former Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly, has admitted that he could have prolonged his career with the national team by at least two years.
Ganguly bid farewell to the Men in Blue in 2008 after being dropped from the Rest of India squad which was due to contest in the Irani Cup. He however, carried on playing in the Indian Premier League, captaining and representing Kolkata Knight Riders for the first three years before moving onto Pune Warriors.
"I didn't have one good series (in Sri Lanka) and, when the Irani Trophy squad was announced, my name was missing," he said. "I'd stopped enjoying my game because I was thinking about things not related to my game, to my cricket. I could have probably just said 'Let them do what they want' and wait for my time."
New Zealand’s premier spinner, Daniel Vettori, has become the first major signing of the second edition of the Australian Big Bash League, penning down a three-year deal with Brisbane Heat.
The League’s transfer window opened on Monday and Vettori has agreed to play for the Heat, the club he represented in the inaugural season last year. Despite the league coinciding with New Zealand’s own T20 tournament, the left-armer is eager to fulfill both his commitments.
“It was a pretty easy decision to make to come back. It's another chance to play in front of the fans at the Gabba which is a great ground,” he said, before adding, "It was difficult at times but still manageable for me last season. It doesn't really affect your performance.”
