Rain dampens opening day of Disney’s Field Hockey Showcase – Hockey Update
Rain slightly dampened the opening day of Disney’s Field Hockey Showcase at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Floriday.
Many high school athletes interested in playing field hockey at the college level consider the Disney Showcase as the top place to be seen by college scouts. Many coaches and trainers are also present to observe the skills and abilities of these young hopeful
field hockey players. The players go all out to impress the coaches and scouts for the possibility of making it to a college through field hockey.
The Director of Event Logistics at USA Field Hockey, Karen Collins said, “Despite the rain this morning, day one went off without a hitch. We are excited about the ESPN3 broadcast, both were exciting games to watch and we are looking forward to doing more
of that in the future. Let’s hope for a little more sunshine in the next couple of days.”
Close to 500 field hockey matches will take place on thirteen different fields over the next four days of the Disney Showcase. Every year the event has grown in size as many young athletics understand the importance of being able to show off their skills
in front of scouts and trainers at the college level.
The two matches covered during the opening day were Connecticut Revolution versus Pinnacle and Quik Stix Elite versus Viper Red.
The Connecticut and Pinnacle had a head-to-head fight during the first half, but no one managed to secure a goal for its team. It was an exciting action-packed match that went 0-0 until the last 5 minutes of the match. However, Pinnacle finally got a shot
into the net making it a 1-0. The last minute of the match was tremendous when Connecticut Revolution got their first penalty corner and with less than 30 seconds on the clock, they scored a goal and tied up the match 1-1. This became the final score of the
match where each team was awarded 1 point.
The second match of the day was very obvious one sided, as the Viper Red Elite, who got two goals in their first half with a 2-0 score. However, Quik Stix shot a goal in the beginning of the second half that was answered back by the Vipers on scoring two
more against Quik Stix making the match conclude on a 4-1.
