Rain forces a draw between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canterbury-c775 in Plunket Shield
The rain-affected Plunket Shield match between Otago and Canterbury ended in a draw at the Mainpower Oval, Rangiora in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 on Thursday. Otago scored 199 runs in their first innings whereas; the hosts scored 200 for the loss of five wickets before
the final day’s play was called-off.
Peter Fulton won the toss for the home team and put Otago into bat. The conditions were overcast, which helped the fast bowlers, but Otago’s captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Craig-Cumming-c1289 batted bravely to carry his bat through the innings.
Aaron Redmond was the first man to be dismissed after adding just four runs to the total. He was soon followed by first-drop http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shaun-Haig-c2504, who failed to trouble the scorers. The Broom brothers, Neil and Darren, also failed to get going as they got out after
scoring two and eight runs respectively.
Wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Derek-de-Boorder-c1359 then joined his captain in the middle and the pair batted sensibly to guide their team out of trouble. The pair put together 77 runs for the fifth wicket and took their team’s total to 121.
However, de Boorder failed to capitalise on the start he got and was sent back to the pavilion after scoring 34 runs. None of the lower-order batsmen were able to support Cumming, but the Otago captain played a superb innings of 106 runs. He eventually ran
out of partners at the other end, as the visitors were all-out for 199.
Matthew Henry bowled well for his team and took three wickets in the first innings. He got some good support from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Todd-Astle-c2697, who grabbed two wickets each.
The start to the Canterbury innings was dismal, as they lost http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Fulton-c2177 batted well to guide their team out of trouble. The pair constructed a 79-run partnership for the
second wicket before Fulton was dismissed on 40.
Nicol also missed out on a half-century, as was sent back to the pavilion after adding 46 runs to the total. This brought Shanan http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stewart-c91370 and Doug Brownlie to the crease and the pair put together a 60-run stand for the fourth wicket.
Stewart got out after scoring 29 runs and was followed by wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Reece-Young-c2302, who failed to open his account.
However, Brownlie and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Ellis-c1037 made sure that their team didn’t lose any more wickets. The pair constructed an unbeaten 53-run partnership before the match ended as a draw. They scored 55 and 29 runs respectively.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Warren-McSkimming-c2779 was the only Otago bowler who troubled the batsmen. He took two wickets for his team.
