Rain halts Rafa-Djoker French Open final – Tennis News
King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, was leading against the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, when play was halted due to rain for the second time during the French Open final in Paris on Sunday.
Djokovic was about to serve in the fourth game of the fourth set, when the match referee stopped them because of bad weather. Previously, the match was suspended when Nadal had to serve at 5-3 in the second set but it started after
a break of 34 minutes. At the end of the day, the Spaniard was leading the contest 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 1-2.
Nadal made the best possible start, as he broke Djokovic in the very first game of the match and held his following serve without losing even a single point, taking a 2-0 lead. The Spaniard struck again in the third to go up 3-0
but then Djokovic made a remarkable comeback, clinching three straight games and levelling the score at 3-3. However, Nadal started to play attackingly once again, grabbing three of the subsequent four and closing it 6-4.
Just like the first set, Nadal claimed breakthrough in the opening game of the following set and consolidated on it to attain a 2-0 advantage. Though, Djokovic bounced back once again and grabbed next couple of games to square
off the score at 2-2. The Spaniard hit another blow in the seventh and won his following serve to move ahead 5-3. Serving to stay in the set at that moment, Djokovic managed to claim just two points and lost it 3-6.
The trend continued in the third set, as Nadal captured first two games and built a 2-0 lead. However, Djokovic raised the level of his play and did not allow the Spaniard to win even a single one later on, breaking the defending
champion three times and securing six consecutively to win 6-2.
After reducing the deficit to two sets to one, Djokovic made full use of the winning momentum, breaking Nadal in the very first game of the fourth set and holding his following serve to grab a 2-0 lead. After a gap of eight, the
Spaniard managed to win the next one and take the score to 1-2. Before Djokovic could start his next serve, it started to rain heavily and the players were sent off from the court.
After almost an hour, match referee finally decided to postpone the match till Monday. It’s just for the second time in the history of Roland Garros that the tournament did not get completed according to the schedule. Nadal and
Djokovic will resume their quest for making history at 1 pm local time.
