Rain interrupted the progress of Essex against Gloucestershire
Rain interrupted the second day’s play between Essex and Gloucestershire in a County Championship Division Two game, at the County Ground Bristol in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013.
Essex were on top after the end of the opening day’s play on Sunday, May 29th, 2011, but their chances in the match might be ruined because of heavy rain on the next day.
The hosts started day two on Monday with eight wickets down for 229 runs on the board. They managed to take their total past 250 and were all-out for 255. In reply, Essex only batted 14 overs and reached 25 runs without a wicket. They trail by 230 runs with
all wickets in tact, but will hope for the rain to stay away in the coming two days.
Earlier, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Bryan-Foster-c65514. The overcast conditions didn’t look ideal for batting and the hosts struggled to get going, especially against the new ball bowlers.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-Andrew-Cockbain-c63756, who opened the innings for Gloucestershire, was unable to cope with the seaming conditions and was sent back to the pavilion without adding a single run to the total.
Things were then put under control by the home team’s opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kane-Stuart-Williamson-c70182. The pair collected 60 runs for the second wicket partnership, majority of which came from the bat off the Kiwi youngster. Williamson looked
in good touch, scoring 50 runs from 74 balls. He failed to make a http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Richard-Griffith-c41953 one for his team though and was dismissed after reaching his half-century.
Gloucestershire started to struggle after the fall of the second wicket and wickets started to fall at regular intervals. The team lost five batsmen for just 102 runs on the board and it appeared as they would be bowled out within 150. However, Coughtrie
managed 45 runs and got good support from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Dent-c1241, who scored 33 runs, giving some confidence to the lower-order batsmen.
Wickets kept on falling from one end though and the hosts were 159 for eight at one stage. Lower-order players, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jonathan-James-Benjamin-Lewis-c69124, came to the rescue of their team, constructing a 79-run stand for the ninth wicket.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Young-c98322 didn’t lose focus at all, becoming the top scorer for his team with an unbeaten 51 runs. He could have scored more runs, but ran out of partners from the other end.
