couple weeks ago i noticed flaky and kinda bumpy skin on his elbow (both sides) going down his fore arm a little. i started putting mtg on it and it looks like it has dried up a bit. its like pieces of yellow crusty skin. i keep it dry and only put mtg on it about every other day. what could this be? am i taking care of it correctly? i was thinking rain rot but idk for sure.

  1. If you dont know for sure Id talk to a vet.  It may be just something thats easily taken care of but maybe not :) good luck

  2. It could be an allergic reaction to flies. Do you have a fly problem in your area. I have had good luck with using iodine shampoo to treat fungal problems, if that is what it is.

  3. M.T.G works great, you could also scrub well with a good nolvassan or betadine solution, but for me M.T.G works good.

  4. sounds like your horse has some fungus... just keep it clean and yes MTG definitely helps and will help the hair grow back too...

rain rot is a peeling and rotting of skin generally on the back and hindquarters... it sounds like your horse has some mild fungus probably from his legs getting sweaty if you ride him a lot... make sure you wash all the sweat off of him after you ride and in the winter brush it off of him or use a damp cloth or sponge...
