Rain saves the day for Maria Sharapova – Tennis News
World number three, Maria Sharapova, is struggling against the likes of the 11th ranked Frenchwoman, Marion Bartoli, in the quarter-final contest at the US Open Championship. She commenced the match on the eve of Tuesday
but went a couple of breakpoints down and couldn’t yield a breakthrough in return that drowned her to a trail of 0-4. However, the blissful rain came at the hard courts of the Ashes in New York that saved a day for the Russian blonde.
Both players waited for quite some time but the condition of the courts was so worst that their match was postponed and will be resumed on Wednesday. Sharapova is leading the scores 30:15 on her opponent’s serve and the night rest
might allow her to devise a plan that will help her break the shackles and come on top.
Former world number one, Sharapova, has never lost a match against the French star in her entire professional career. However, things seem different at the hard courts of Flushing Meadows this time around and the Russian blonde
will have to comeback from a trail of two breakpoints to save the set when she returns on Wednesday.
In the first encounter of the day, the reigning world number superstar, Victoria Azarenka, stole the triumph against the 28-year-old Aussie defending champion, Samantha Stosur, to confirm her place in the semi-finals. She won the
opening set in comprehensive fashion 6-1 but lost the second battle 4-6.
The final phase of the match witnessed the momentum swirling from one player to another by the end of each game. However, the Belarusian superstar managed to squeeze a win in the tie-breaker round 7-6(5). She will contest the semi-final
battle against the winner of the match between the Russian blonde Sharapova and the French powerhouse Bartoli.
Other match that was postponed included the singles contest between the likes of the former world number one, Andy Roddick, and the Argentine bronze medallist, Juan Martin Del Potro.  They were playing the first set tie-breaker
and the American led it by 1-0 before the rain forced them to postpone the match.
