Rain saves the struggling http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nottinghamshire-c826 team against Essex: Clydesdale Bank 40-Group C
A Group C match of the Clydesdale Bank 40 between Nottinghamshire and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Sunday, July 17, 2011.
The match started on scheduled time, but rain interrupted play after the first five overs of the home team’s innings. It took some time for the conditions to improve, but the spectators were finally given some good news, as both teams headed out for play
once again.
The match was reduced to 23 overs per side and the Nottinghamshire team only managed 127 runs for the loss of seven wickets. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Riki-Wessels-c2319 was the only batsman, who looked solid at the crease, scoring 35 runs.
Nottinghamshire’s innings was followed by heavy rain and the umpires decided to end the match without a result. This would have pleased the hosts, as they were not in a very good position to challenge the opposition.
However, the overcast conditions would have made batting difficult and the spectators could have enjoyed a thrilling game of cricket.
Earlier, the Essex skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Foster-c1644 had won the toss and decided to field first. He expected the ball to do a few tricks in the first half of the match, as there was a heavy cloud cover over the field and the pitch also had some dampness.
The decision proved to be a good one, as the home team lost their opening batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alex-Hales-c985 early. The seasoned campaigner was unable to get going and was dismissed after adding just eight runs to the total from 10 balls.
Soon after the dismissal of Hales, the match was stopped due to rain. Nottinghamshire had collected 23 runs at that stage of the innings for the loss of one wicket.
Once the game resumed, the home team’s innings was carried forward nicely by Wessels and Ali Brown. The pair put together 32 runs for the second wicket partnership before the latter got out after scoring 27 runs.
The innings saw a collapse after the wicket of Ali, as wickets started to tumble. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Voges-c925 were unable to make an impression and were sent back to the pavilion after adding six runs each to the total.
They were followed by the team’s captain, Chris Read, who managed just one run in his short stay at the crease.
Wessels tried to bat until the end, but his resistance came to an end in the 19th over of the innings. He ended up with 35 runs off 42 balls with the help of a couple of fours and one massive six.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ben-Phillips-c1138 remained unbeaten on 11 and 12 respectively, guiding the team’s total to 127 in the end.
Essex’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RS-Bopara-c2373 finished with 3/27, but he would have been disappointed in the end, not getting an opportunity to bat.
