Rainer Schuettler, Marsel Ilhan cruise to the second round – AEGON Championships 2011
Rainer Schuettler defeats Bobby Reynolds 6-1, 6-1
German Rainer Schuettler, ranked 101st in the world, crushed world number 141 Bobby Reynolds of USA in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round of AEGON Championships at the Queen’s Club in London on Monday. It took
the German one hour and four minutes to undo his opponent.
Schuettler dominated the match from its beginning as he broke the American in the second game of the first set, building a 3-0 lead. Reynolds opened his account as he held his serve in the fourth game and reduced his opponent’s
lead to 3-1. After that, it was all Schuettler show as he grabbed three successive games, breaking the American in the sixth game to clinch the set 6-1. The 35-year-old returned exceptionally well, winning an incredible 43 percent of the first return points
in the opening set. Schuettler saved all the three break points he received and converted two of the three break points on Reynold’s serve in the first set.
The German thrashed his opponent in the second set as he broke him three times, dropping just a single game and clinching the set 6-1. The right-handed kept his first serve percentage at 73 percent, capturing 75 percent of the
first service points in the second set. The five feet and eleven inches tall won three of the eight break points he received in the second set.
Schuettler will play defending champion Sam Querrey of USA in the second round.
Marsel Ilhan beats Jan Hajek 6-4, 6-4
World number 112 Marsel Ilhan of Turkey downed Czech Jan Hajek, ranked 179thin the world, in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the round of 32. The match lasted for an hour and 23 minutes.
The Turkish and Hajek held their serve in the first eight games of the opening set, equalising the score at 4-4. Ilhan broke the Czech in the ninth game and served out the set at 5-4. The 23-year-old hit six aces and 70 percent
of the first serves, sealing 79 percent of the points on them in the opening set. The right–handed converted one of the three break points he received on Hajek’s serve in the first set.
Ilhan took an early lead in the second set as he broke Hajek in the third game and consolidated on it to take a 3-1 lead. The Turkish did not allow the Czech to break back and bagged the set 6-4. The six feet and three inches tall
troubled his opponent with attacking serves, hitting six aces and 75 percent of the first serves in the second set.
The Istanbul resident is slated to face Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, ranked 30th in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings, in the second round.
