Seeded at number four in the tournament, Rainer Schuettler of Germany cleared the opening round clash of Open Castilla y Leon by overcoming Adrian Menendez-MasEiras of Spain, on Tuesday afternoon.
Being a part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour, the competition took place on the hard courts of Segovia, Spain, but it ended in the dismay of the local crowd, as the Spaniard crumbled in the second set to suffer a defeat. Schuettler displayed his magnificent tennis to wrap up the contest in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-4, taking one hour and thirty six minutes of play, to make it to the second round of the tournament.
The Fourth seeded German secured 30 out of 41 first serve points en route to victory, while his contestant closely followed him with 25 from 32 points. Intense competition was witnessed in the opener with both men labouring hard to get the early advantage in the game and eventually dragged the set in to a tie breaker round. Schuettler had no real difficulty in closing out the tie breaker and then went on to conclude victory by bagging the second set.
The opening set took off with cautious tennis from both players getting their eye in the game. The German drew first blood in the contest by breaking his opponent’s serve in the eighth game but Menendez-Maceiras retaliated immediately in the next set by nailing a break point. A regular game followed to take the opening set into the tie breaker round, once the scores got dead locked at 6-6.
Schuettler went ballistic in the tie breaker round and reeled off four straight points to race to a 4-0 lead. He then closed out the first set at 7-6(2) to get one up in the contest. Once getting into momentum, the German never looked back in the game and cruised through the second set to register victory. He broke the Spanish serve in the fifth game and Menendez-Maceiras failed to recover from the deficit in the rest of the game. Schuettler 15 out of 19 first serve points to conclude victory at 6-4, getting into the second round of Open Castilla y Leon.
The German will face the French competitor Fabrice Martin, in the next round to make a berth in the quarter-finals of the tournament. Martin was successful against the Bolivian contestant, Federico Zeballos, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, in the opening round of the event.
