  1. well, i use craigslist.com a lot, and since people give stuff away on there all the time, i always thought it would be really cool to pick up a bunch of that stuff and have a giant yard sale or something. you could try that!

  2. A woman at my work just was in a similar situation sending her daughter to Japan for school, so I have some tips here.

1.) Spaghetti Dinner - She used her church's kitchen and she and her daughter made large (and I mean large) pots of spaghetti for a crowd of about 60 people.  Each person paid $10 for the dinner and this included the spaghetti, garlic bread, a soda and cookies for dessert.  All the proceeds went to her trip.  It was cute because her friends all chipped in and donated some of their allowances towards the spaghetti, the sauce, the bread and cookies.

2.) Sees Candy Sale - Halloween is just around the corner.  Look up a local Sees Candy store and tell them your story.  They have fundraisers where they give you a sheet of paper with all of their candies listed on it.  You pass it around to people, they place an order through you and when the candy comes in they pick it up.  (They pay when placing order).  You turn the money into Sees and you get 40% of whatever sold.  With all the holidays coming up you could probably sell quite a bit!

3.)  Go to $.99 stores in your area and look for crafting ideas.  Christmas is coming up and some places might be stocking Thanksgiving and XMas stuff.  Last year the woman at work and her daughter made centerpieces (with supplies from Michael's and Joanne's Crafts) and sold them here at work and in their neighborhood and church.  They used simple candles, pine cones and other potpourri stuff you can buy real cheap and sometimes had little glass vases with multi-colored marble-beads in them.  They sold each for like $5-10 depending on size.  They made quite a bit doing this!

Good luck but the options are endless.  I lean towards crafting ideas because they are fun to make and nice to sell.  Churches can often sponsor students in your position and some will donate a percentage from their money collections to your cause.  Hope you have fun and take bug spray!

  3. Car Wash! Get permission from a local restaurant or some other local establishment that has hose hook ups and use there parking lot to run a car wash, you could ask for donations or set a price for the car wash.

There are a group of kids that do this near my work, and they are always having the car wash on the weekends when some parents have the time to help participate.

Good luck - I hope you make the money you need!
