Raising pigs?

How much money can be made raising pigs? e.g How much do piglets cost? How much does it cost to raise a piglet to slaughter size? How much do grown pigs sell for?

For just on piglet freshly weaned it cost £25. To raise a piglet to slaughter size it costs £60. A piglet will sell for £90 which leaves £5 but then you've got labour price, so at the moment you will make nothing at all!

You need to raise for 4H.  You could end up making good money.

Believe it or not they can be sold from $5 all the way up to $5,000.

My dad is raising a pig and yes, it is very expsensive raising a pig because they need special food to keep them healthy and need lots of space to run around.

They need mud also to keep cool since they do not sweat.

They need to eat corn, wheats, oats, barely and greens and dried food made from meat. they also need vitamins and minerals.

It must be dry and warm in the winter and cool in the summer for your pig.

I dont know how much it would be in all, but it is exspensive

Right now, my boss is losing money and we farrow to finish.  He does sell one rotation for $30 per pig, right off the sow.  He has contracts at the processing plant, and with the price of grain, fuel, etc. he mentioned he lost $17 per finished pig last month.

Tell you what though-pork from a home raised hog is so much better tasting than store bought pork.  I get a couple pigs a year from the boss and have them butchered at the local locker.You can't beat the flavor!

If you want to raise money you should mow lawns or get a job at wal mart.  Lately the price has been so low I am loosing money on every hog I send to slaughter and I cant keep them too long or they will be too old.  The quality of a hog you raise on your own would be much better than the variety you get in stores.  So if your motivation is for your own table I would recomend it.  You can also feed your Hog the table scraps from your own table.
