Rajai Davis’ five RBI’s helps Toronto Blue Jays overpower New York Yankees 10-7 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays overpowered the New York Yankees 10-7 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Sunday, August 12 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
After losing first two games of the series, the Blue Jays were looking to fight back strongly in the finale to avoid an embarrassing series sweep at Rogers Centre and that is exactly what they did.
David Cooper looked in outstanding touch as he singled to right in the first inning to put Blue Jays on the board. Jeff Mathis earned an RBI double and Rajai Davis doubled to deep left-centre to extend the lead to 4-0.
"He hurt us today, there's no doubt about it, offensively and defensively," Girardi said of Davis in a post game interview.
"When I saw him turn his back I thought he gave up on it," McGehee said of Davis catch in the deep. "Little did I know he was just timing it up.”
Shortstop Mike McCoy reached on infield single and Edwin Encarnacion connected for a two run home-run in the fourth to put Toronto in a commanding 7-0 position. Yankees left themselves with too much work to do in closing stages of the game.
Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano hit back-to-back home-runs in the sixth inning to give Yankees some momentum. Jayson Nix and Nick Swisher also made useful contributions in the seventh but the Blue Jays held on to a three run lead to emerge victorious.
Starting pitcher J.A. Happ pitched with great control and precision as he gave up just four runs in five plus innings in a high scoring game. Relief pitcher Casey Janssen pitched the perfect ninth to hold off the Yankees’ offence.
"He did a good job," McGehee said of Happ. "I've seen him quite a bit in the National League. He's got three quality pitches. When he's got all his pitches going, he's a handful."
It will be interesting to see if John Farrell and company can come up with similar performances in their next series against the red hot Chicago White Sox.
