Rajon Rondo believes that NBA Championship this season is realistic – NBA Update
The Boston Celtics have been talking big all summer and it seems that Rajon Rondo does not want to be left behind.
The Boston Celtics were struggling for prominence before their put together the Big Three of Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce back in the summer of 2007. The results were immediate and the C’s went on to win the 2008 NBA title.
Rondo was just a mere pawn at that time. Now, he is being hailed as the king and believes that ‘his’ side has a better chance of pulling off a championship run than the 2008 one;
“I think it's our best shot,” Rondo said. “Not to discredit the 2008 (championship) team that we had, but if this team buys into the system and listens to (coach) Doc (Rivers), the sky is the limit. The championship could be ours. Not a lot of teams can say they can compete for a championship each year, and definitely this year with the talent we have, that's our one goal.”
The Celtics lost Allen in the off season and agonizingly to their bitter most rivals and nemesis, Miami Heat. That has effectively broken the star troika in Bean Town and if truth be told, the main reason behind it was Rondo himself. However, even after Allen’s departure, the roster looks solid.
The Celtics drafted two bigs in Jared Sullinger and Fab Melo early in the off season, and then made some savvy moves to lure in Courtney Lee and Jason Terry. Jeff Green was re-signed and so was Chris Wilcox. With Garnett, Pierce, Brandon Bass and Rondo already in the lineup, the team certainly has potential. But, that is all there is to it.
It is a hard fact that Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs have rosters much stronger than Boston and barring an upset, there is no way that Boston can make it any further than the Eastern Conference Finals. They are a team with new pieces and have just lost the best three point shooter of all time.
Although good on his part, all Rondo has tried to do here is create some hype. But that’s what team leaders are supposed to do aren’t they?
