Raleigh defeat Hublot to clinch 2011 Beach Polo World Cup – US Polo Update
The Raleigh team showed an impressive game in the sand and captured their first ever 2011 AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup played at the Southern Beach in Miami, Florida on April 24.
The seventh edition of the most prominent and world’s largest Beach Polo Tournament was organised by Nespresso. The arena was packed with hundreds of spectators to enjoy the grand finale where Raleigh overpowered Hublot by four goals, 10-6.
The Raleigh line-up was comprised of Pelon Escapite, Luis Escobar and Bash Kazi while the other finalist team Hublot, the defending champions of the 2010 edition was playing the game under the headship of Kris Kampsen. Kazi’s line-up with to-and-fro attacks
put talented Hublot under heavy weight and punched ten goals against the six of its competitor.
Pelon Escapite, the Mexico-based player scored four goals of which three were scored in the final set of play. He was named for the Most Valuable Player award of the tournament. Owing to stiff defence from the Raleigh side, Hublot failed to take lead throughout
the four chukkas.
Luis Escobar of Costa Rica was at his best in the grand finale. He notched five points and made the victory possible. It was a good show from all the Raleigh players that managed to minimise Hublot’s strikes only for six goals in the four chukkas.
In the meantime, Grey Goose powered an 8-5 win over AMG-Mercedes in the finals of the Carl Fisher International Cup. It is pertinent to mention here that AMG-Mercedes played the event under the captaincy of John Walsh, the host of the television show America’s
Most Wanted. Raul Gringo Colombres was named MVP of the tournament.
In the other competition, Yellow Cab captured the Julius Fleischman Memorial Cup after defeating LAN-Comcast by 9-5. Mauricio Devrient and Brandon Phillips notched four goals apiece and each had an assist to lead their team to a crucial victory in the subsidiary
cup. Devrient was chosen as MVP of the tournament. Chestnut, the nine-year-old colt of Kris Kampsen was selected as Best Playing Pony of the event.
Bruce Orosz, the founder and President of a popular Polo magazine and the producer of the AMG Miami Beach Polo Cup while speaking to the media said that they provided new type of entertainment to the masses. He stated, “This year’s world-class level of play
raised the bar for years to come and the fierce competition between the players in the arena kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.”
The AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup is considered to be one of the largest polo tournaments in the world. The fans and spectators were not disappointed as the tournament was filled with some of the world’s top polo athletes competing for top honours.
