Ramadan working hours?

I am working in Dubai at an European company, who respect the Ramadan working hours (6),although no one participates Ramadan there. My wife works at a local Arab family, but she has to work regular hours during Ramadan like she always does (almost available 24/7!!) Is that not at least a bit strange? What can we do about it? Note: Arab family is well known,so a bit sensitive subject.

  1. well there is a big difference in working in a company and a family. maybe the family might just give her some bonus etc during eid . but dont expect that they will let her work less hours.

  2. Hi,

your question is a bid hard to answer without knowing what kind of job your wife is doing for local family. Domestic workers/employees do not fall under the UAE Labor Law. Terms and conditions are written in the contracts the two parties agreed on and signed.

Working in a Muslim household during the holy month of Ramadan she should expect to work late and to start early. Therefor it might be possible for your wife to get some time off during the day.

If your wife works almost 24/7, no changes are on the way and no amicable solution can be found, tell her to resign unless she makes an exorbitant salary. (profession?)

Btw.: before she took the job you had to give your permission to work. Just forbid her to work and let her look for another job. This bit "sensitivee" subject can also be handled with very well known families. It's just how things are said. I am quiet sure that you are  financially able to sponsor your wife.

I resigned after 230 over hours last last month and do not regret it a bit!

    Ramadan Kareem and good luck!
