Pakistan’s former captain and opening batsman, Ramiz Raja, is disappointed with Umar Akmal’s progress in international cricket and feels that the right-hander is yet to fulfil his potential.
Akmal, 22, is considered to be one of the most talented players in the country, with a wide range of strokes under his belt. Over the years, the stylish batsman has played some remarkable knocks for the country but he has been a touch inconsistent.
Upon debuting in 2009, the right-hander was tipped to bear the Pakistani batting’s burden in the coming years; however, his rash stroke-play has often led to his downfall.
While talking to Pakpassion, the former cricketer expressed that Akmal is a game-changer and has the ability to win matches for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 single-handedly, but raised some serious question-marks about his shot-selection.
"Umar Akmal when he comes out to bat needs to read match situations a lot better. Umar has a lot of talent and ability, he is a power player and he is different to most of the other Pakistani young batsmen and he wants to bat in an aggressive mode and to
dominate bowlers which is a good thing," said Ramiz.
Despite being a touch inconsistent, Umar is arguably Pakistan’s best limited-over batsman, with averages of 38 and 25.50 runs per innings in One Day Internationals and T20Is respectively. In 2011, Umar lost his place in the Test team after a couple of irresponsible
knocks.
The cricketer from Lahore scored a hundred on his Test debut against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758. Quite unfortunately however, these two remain his only hundreds in international cricket till date.
Ramiz firmly believes that Umar has the potential to become a world-beater, with the kind of talent he possesses, but wants the right-hander to be more responsible now and show application, if he wants to be successful at the global arena.
The former captain mentioned, "If I’m being brutally honest then I’m disappointed with Umar’s growth as a batsman because with the kind of talent and ability he has, Umar should have done a lot better than what he has produced so far."
