After an embarrassing defeat to India in the first One Day International (ODI), the West Indian middle-order batsman, Ramnaresh Sarwan, has admitted that the team has been missing the explosive opening batsman, Chris Gayle.
Gayle, who won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award in the recently-concluded fourth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), was not selected in the national squad for the first two ODIs against India due to his ongoing clash with West Indies Cricket
Board (WICB).
The controversy started during the recent ODI series between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 and West Indies, when the WICB accused the blazing all-rounder for preferring to play for the lucrative IPL over national cricket duties.
Gayle hit back and denied the allegations, claiming that he was available for selection.
The Windies suffered a humiliating four-wicket loss in the first ODI against India at Queen’s Park Oval on Monday, June 6, 2011. The Caribbean batsmen performed below to their potential and posted a meagre score of 214 in 50 overs. Later in the match, the
Men in Blue achieved the target convincingly in the 44.5 overs, courtesy of Rohit Sharma’s outstanding batting.
Expressing dissatisfaction over his team’s lacklustre performance with the bat, Sarwan lamented over the exclusion of Gayle in the West Indian side.
"Frankly, you miss his presence. But selectors have given us a team and we have to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Try-c94438 to and do our best. But the spirit of the team is high and we are only going to get better", Sarwan said.
Gayle has served West Indies in 228 ODIs in which he has 8087 runs and 156 wickets to his credit. After a terrible show by the batsmen in the first ODI, it is expected that the board will recall Gayle in the side for the last three ODIs of the five-match
series.
Sarwan, meanwhile, praised Team http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mahendra-Singh-Dhoni-c73820.
"I was impressed by the way they played spin and kept rotating the strike. I also liked how they went after the new ball. It was a learning experience", added the 30-year old batsman who top-scored with 56 for the home side.
