Ramon Hernandez sparks as Cincinnati Reds defeat St. Louis Cardinals 9-8 – MLB Update
Cincinnati Reds’ pinch-hitter, Ramon Hernandez was outstanding with the bat as he went 1-for-1 with an average of .311 and hit one RBI in the Reds’ 9-8 win against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on July 6.
The Reds’ batters stepped on the gas from the very first inning as they smashed five runs at the top of the first to get an initial 5-0 lead. Chris Heisey hit a solo homer (418 feet) towards left-field, Jay Bruce homered (389 feet) to right-field while Edgar
Renteria, Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips each singled to end the five-run campaign.
During the second and third inning of the game, the batters got out as Matt Holliday was grounded out to third base, Lance Berkman popped out to short-stop and Colby Rasmus struck-out swinging at the bottom of the second inning.
The Reds’ batters also failed to raise their lead at the top of the third inning when Votto flied out to left-field, Phillips lined out to first base and Scott Rolen also lined out to left-field. During the fourth inning, Fred Lewis struck a one-run homer
(423 feet) towards right-centre field to give the Reds a 6-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Reds got an 8-0 lead when Rolen homered (365 feet) to left-field and Phillips posted a single run. On the other side, the Cardinals got off the mark in the sixth inning by adding two runs and reduced their lead 8-2 when Tony Cruz
and Daniel Descalso both scored two runs jointly towards right-field.
The Cardinals’ batters blasted five quick runs in the seventh inning to cut their deficit 8-7. Holliday homered (401 feet) to centre-field while Brandon Dickson, Rasmus, Descalso, Ryan Theriot and Skip Schumaker each made one individual run to finish the
five-run campaign for the Cardinals.
Eighth inning went without even a single run but the game was tied 8-8 at the bottom of the ninth inning when Jon Jay hit a tie home-run (406 feet) towards right-centre. The additional three innings passed score-less as the batters were struck-out due to
their lazy shots.
In the 13th inning, Hernandez hit a ground rule double towards left-field and Bruce added the final run to give the Reds a 9-8 lead. However, the Cardinals sealed the three-game series 2-1 at St. Louis in the end.
