Ramon Ramirez gives up double as New York Mets experience 2-3 defeat against Miami Marlins – MLB
Relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez leaks one run in the eighth inning as New York Mets fall to Miami Marlins 2-3 at Marlins Park, Miami on October 1, 2012 in the first match of the three game series.
Both the teams languish at the bottom half of the National League East Division table. They are playing remaining games of the season with an intention to improve for next year.
Their players are looking to gain some confidence back before Spring Training and make sure they learn from mistakes.
The Mets were not as bad as the Marlins were offensively and yet they ended up losing the match. They produced 11 hits, three more than the Miami, but they struggled to capitalise on them in the game.
First run of the game was scored in the fifth inning which saw the Mets leading by one run.
New York added one more run in the sixth. As a result, their lead strengthened. However, their dominance did not last long as Miami came back strongly. By posting three runs in a span of three innings, they went ahead of the Mets.
Mets’ pitchers were their undoing on Monday. Jeurys Familia, starter for New York, lacked control and command. He was unable to throw the pitches in the right areas as he walked six batters.
Relievers that followed him were even worse. Ramirez stepped on the mound in the eighth inning. Under pressure, he failed to stop batters from striking hits.
By allowing a double, he permitted the Marlins to blow the lead of the Mets and defeat them later on.
Mets’ manager Terry Collins, while commenting on the outing of Familia has pointed out his weakness with regard to allowing walks.
"That's been his problem, base on balls," Collins said. "You saw when he was over the plate they don't hit them."
Marlins’ manager Ozzie Guillen finally has a reason to feel good after all the criticism he endured all through the season. His players came from behind and won in stunning fashion on Monday.
"Very exciting, very well played. We pitched well, we got a couple hits when we needed. We got big hits today. We don't have to pitch a shutout to win games," Ozzie Guillen said. "It's nice to see the guys go out there and perform and don't rely on Stanton
to do the damage."
It will be interesting to see how the Marlins keep their momentum going in the upcoming matches.
