Ramon Santiago’s hit lifts Detroit Tigers 2-1 over Tampa Bay Rays – MLB Update
In a game that saw 37 players being featured and two ejections as Detroit Tigers beat Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 on Monday, June 13 at Comerica Park, Detroit.
It was Ramon Santiago who scored a RBI triple in the 10th inning to win the game for his team
"It was just a great ballgame," Detroit’s manager Jim Leyland said. "Nip and tuck all the way, two good teams going at it the way you're supposed to go at it. We finally got the big hit."
The game started fast, as the primary focus was on the role of the starting pitchers on Monday. Phil Coke was merciless with his rapidly increasing velocity of fastballs. Alex Cobb did not prove to be a wrong choice either for Tampa Bay Rays.
Both pitchers kept throwing scoreless innings until the fifth inning when the Tigers’ offence finally put an end to the drought of runs. Victor Martinez singled to centre, allowing Brennan Boesch to score the first run for the Tigers.
After Alex Cobb faltered, there was a widespread hope, given the extraordinarily great performance of Coke, that the Detroit starter would disallow any runs. He was infallibly successful in his strategy.
A twist occurred in the seventh inning after Justin Ruggiano was tagged up and called out by umpire. That prompted the Tampa Bay Manager to storm out and argue which resulted in his ejection.
"The replay speaks for itself. MLB really has to review all that stuff, because it is a play that comes up quite often," Maddon said. "I was a little annoyed that sometimes, it seems to go against us on the heavy side. I had my say, but that's not up to
me to rectify."
However, the game had another twist in the eighth inning – if anyone thought it had ceased to be exciting anymore - when Justin Ruggiano scored the tying run for Tampa Bay when Joaquin Benoit came for pitching.
Ruggiano’s single added a new flavour of excitement in the game following which Joel Peltra, Juan Cruz, and David Purcey threw scoreless 8th, 9th and 10th innings for their respective teams, keeping the game tied.
Once Kyle Farnsworth was dispatched to pitch for the Rays in the bottom of 10th inning, Roman Santiago struck a magnificent hit, giving the Tigers a late but eagerly awaited 2-1 victory in a closely fought battle.
