The defending champions of Europe faced a stern test against Portugal in the semi-final of this year’s European Championship. La Roja were pushed to the limit as the match remained evenly matched until the very end.
The match was so massively competitive that the two sides did not manage to break the dead lock in the normal 90 minutes of game time, along with the 30 minutes of extra time.
Both sides created a number of threatening chances, however, as the stalemate persisted the shadow of a penalty shoot-out loomed over the fixture.
As extra time was brought to an end, the match had to go to penalties. From there on, the World Champions secured a victory as they won the shoot-out with a final score of 4-2.

The player, who was one of the penalty scorers for La Furia Roja in the semi-final, also took out the time to discuss his missed spot kick against Bayern Munich in the semi-final of the Champions League. The defender failed to spot his penalty sending Madrid
out of the competition.
Ramos stated that he was hurt with the miss and wanted to redeem the missed penalty by scoring for the national side.
While talking to reporters, the centre-back quoted:
"Honestly, I would not like to go into a penalty shoot-out again. But we are very eager to win and for that we will need to stay humble and try to do things well, while respecting Italy.”
“A lot of things were said and the truth is that they hurt my pride. But I did not take the penalty like this for any special reason, only because I was confident. There were many people waiting for me to miss, but that never affected me."
