Rampaging Alvaro Quiros ready to defend Dubai Desert Classic title this week
As the latest episode of Dubai Desert Classic kicks off this week, Spaniard Alvaro Quiros will be hoping to retain the title he won last year.
Quiros’ stellar journey in the Middle East started 12 months ago when he landed the coveted 2011 Omega Dubai Desert Classic title on the scenic Emirates Golf Club’s the Majlis Course.
He struck again in the closing event, carding another European Tour victory at the Dubai World Championship presented by DP World.
His jaw-dropping performance in Dubai has turned him into a potential threat at this week’s Dubai event.
Quiros said ahead of the event over this weekend, “I hope that performance can be an inspiration for this week. I have played in Dubai so hopefully that is the place where I can make everything come together again”.
Quiros’ final round at Dubai last year, sent many of the aspiring golfers packing, including the likes of Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer, all of who were inside the top-five on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
His roller-coaster round included a triple-bogey seven and a Hole-in-One where he took over the likes of Anders Hansen and James Kingston by one stroke.
He added, “It was an amazing final round last year and, to be honest, I remember the triple bogey before the hole- in-one but I hope that I can take a lot of positivity from my performance there and, of course, at the Dubai World Championship and get another great result”.
European Tour has experienced amazing acceptance in the Middle Eastern countries and the global enterprise has now expanded its operations in more than 25 countries worldwide.
The tour holds regular events in countries stretching from Far-East to Bermuda and Middle East.
The players on the tour also thoroughly support the events worldwide and regularly visit distant playing venues to throw their weight behind the tour’s hectic calendar.
Quiros will be pitched against a tough battle amid fierce trailblazers of the likes of McIlroy, Westwood, Kaymer and several PGA Tour players.
Quiros’ penchant for the breezy Middle Eastern turf probably originates from the windy Spanish courses where the Mediterranean winds lash the picturesque courses all year.
Turning professional in 2004, the 29-year-old San Roque native has won seven professional titles in the course of his career.
He carded his maiden European Tour victory at Alfred Dunhill Championship in 2006.
He took over Paul Lawrie in Portugal Masters in 2008 by three strokes to win his second European Tour title.
His first victory in Middle East came in the year 2009 when he lifted the CommercialBank Qatar Masters in January.
He defeated Louis Oosthuizen and Henrik Stenson by three strokes. Quiros won twice last year, both titles came on the Middle Eastern turf, one of his favourite hunting ground.
