Rampant Rapid Redux posts his 17th win in row, two more away from equaling the record
The 5-year-old gelding, Rapid Redux, is on the brink of breaking the all time record of 19 wins on the trot by a North American Thoroughbred. The current record holders are two, the superstar mare, Zenyatta, and the New Mexico bred mare, Pepper’s Ride, both
winning 19 consecutive races.
The son of Pleasantly Perfect, out of Thiscatsforcaryl by Storm Cat, Rapid Redux stayed on course when he landed his 17th consecutive victory on 16 September at Charles Town.
In a field of eight horses, David Wells trained Rapid Redux was sent as the 3 to 5 favourite to win the $5,000 starter allowance.
Ridden by jockey J. D. Acosta, Rapid Redux was immediately sent to the front by his jockey.
It was a comfortable break from the pair in the quest to conquer the 1 1/16 mile long dirt track. Rapid Redux gained a two length advantage when he reached the 6 furlong mark, which was covered in 1 minute and 12.75 seconds.
When the runners entered the short stretch, Rapid Redux was comfortably ahead of the lot by 3 ½ lengths, and had no problem to keep Smiling Jordan at bay, as he showed some intent to take over Rapid Redux’s lead.
The Robert Cole Jr. owned Rapid Redux went on to defeat Smiling Jordan by a margin of 2 ¾ lengths, covering the distance of 1 1/16 miles in 1 minute and 45.30 seconds.
There were signs of Rapid Redux wilting at the end of the race but jockey J Acosta kept him in the lead and got him to hit the wire first, despite the pressure of other horses gaining on him as the field turned for home.
Rapid Redux began his winning streak in December last year at Penn National, where he picked up his first two wins among his massive 17 wins in a row streak.
At Charles Town, Rapid Redux completed his 15th win in a row and the versatile horse has done it on seven different tracks, with seven different riders, covering distances ranging from 5 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles.
