Rams contact Brian Gaine to replace Billy Devaney; Snead, DeCosta and Dawson also in line – NFL News
St. Louis Rams have contacted Miami Dolphins’ Director of Player Personnel, Brian Gaine, as part of new general manager hunt for the franchise,
ESPN reported on Wednesday.
The development came after the dismissal of Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo and General Manager Billy Devaney from their respective posts following a dreadful season.
According to different reports, the Rams have also been given a green signal to interview Atlanta Falcons’ Les Snead, and Baltimore Ravens’ Eric DeCosta for the same post.
On Monday, a day after the end of 2011 regular season, Rams’ Owner, Stan Kroenke, fired the head coach and the general manager. The Rams only won two games in the season and lost 14 only to end up at the bottom of the National Football Conference West division
ranking table.
Devaney, who still had a year left on his contract, spent four years at St. Louis. In his tenure, the Rams were defeated 52 times, and secured only 12 victories. The Rams registered their last playoff-appearance in 2004.
After firing their personnel, the Rams decided to come up with a new formula to select new people for running the team’s affairs. The franchise is seeking services of a relatively younger candidate, who would team up with a veteran coach to take the team
to new heights.
An elite panel comprising experts including former Coach d**k Vermeil and Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk will constitute an advisory board to assist the Rams in the selection process.
Apart from the mentioned names, Vice President of Football Operations at Tennessee Titans, Lake Dawson, is also considered for the post of Rams’ general manager.
Dawson is believed to have strong ties to former Titans’ coach Jeff Fisher, who is emerging as one of the most favourable candidate for the post of head coach.
Earlier, Rams’ Chief Operating Officer Kevin Demoff also acknowledged that Fisher was being considered to replace Spagnuolo, but the COO maintained that no decision had been made. Coincidentally, Fisher’ agent is Demoff’s father.
“He is someone who is a potentially attractive candidate,” Demoff said about Fisher. “But I think the one thing to caution is everybody assumes that because my father represents Jeff Fisher that we are a natural fit. His job is to represent Jeff Fisher;
our job is to find the right head coach for the Rams. If those two intersect, that would be fantastic. If they don’t intersect, we will do the right thing for our respective clients and our respective organisations and then move forward.”
The Rams are expected to finalise all the affairs within a couple of weeks.
