Ramunas Navardauskas had a terrific start to his Giro d’ Italia 2012
Ramunas Navardauskas is leading the Team Garmin-Barracuda at the Giro d’ Italia and the cyclist is optimistic to continue his tremendous form at the three-week race.
The cyclist finished 8th overall at the Tour of Qatar and also achieved the young rider classifications and the second stage of the race.
He rode brilliantly during the opening individual time trial stage of the Giro until Manuele Boaro of Team Saxo Bank overcame the Lithuanian towards the end.
The 24-year-old finished almost 22 seconds behind the race leader Taylor Phinney of Team BMC and occupied the sixth position.
Geraint Thomas, Alex Rasmussen, Manuele Boaro and Gustav Larsson achieved the second, the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
Ramunas was delighted after the win and briefed that he was not expecting the stage victory.
He cited, "I didn't expect to be in the lead for such a long time, I'm proud of myself that I did so well".
"What I enjoy a lot at Garmin-Barracuda is that every rider is given a good program”.
"My plan is again is to help me progress as an individual as well as contribute to the team's success”.
“I'm still looking at what kind of rider I can become. To be a team player is my priority".
Navardauskas started his professional pursuit with Klaipeda-Splendid Cycling Team in 2007.
He also represented Team Ulan (2008), Team Piemonte (2009) before accepting an offer from Team Garmin-Barracuda in 2011.
The cyclist is continuing his second consecutive season with the team and is determined to help Jonathan Vaughters with his improved performance in the current season.
The 24-year-old finished at the 161st position during the second stage of the Giro d’ Italia and sustained the 6th overall spot after the stage 2 classifications.
Mark Cavendish wins the stage 2 of the Italian race while Taylor Phinney continued his overall dominance by the end of the second stage.
Team FDJ-Bigmat is leading the team’s classifications with Team Orica-GreenEdge, Team Garmin-Barracuda, Team Saxo Bank and Team Sky holds the next four spots.
