Ramzan Kadyrov acquires Maritimer after Sweet Ducky in March 2011
The highly controversial owner in horse racing is the Chechen President, Ramzan Kadyrov, who bought the Canadian bred, Maritimer, for around $1.7 million, sealing the deal on 20th January, 2012.
The owner, Howie Walton was reported to have said:
"I have mixed emotions about selling him, but sometimes these offers are simply too big to turn down”.
Maritimer’s new trainer is Seth Benzel, who had also trained Kadyrov’s other horse, Sweet Ducky, that Kadyrov bought in March 2011.
Yielding out of the hefty investment, the president plans to race the three-year-old colt in the Group 2 $2 million UAE Derby, and might also test him in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, presented by Yum! Brands.
Ramzan Kadyrov has had an unstable standing with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission which is disturbed due to the not so very popular charges that have been made against the president from time to time, regarding corruption, torture and different
forms of human rights' violation.
In order to get entitled to a license for horse racing in Kentucky, Ramzan Kadyrov will have to appear in front of the review panel that suggests and recommends the applicant under consideration.
However, if the application gets withdrawn or if the person fails to appear then the license will be withheld.
The three-year-old bay colt of Stormy Atlantic out of Highland Mood, has made five career starts since 31st July, 2011, out of which he has won twice and was always ridden by L. Contreras.
He won the Coronation Futurity Stakes on 6th November, 2011, at Woodbine, and right after that, he also won the Display Stakes on 27th November, 2011, at Woodbine again.
The winner of the Coronation Futurity Stakes stands out to be the favourite for the Woodbine’s Queen’s Plate, which is specifically for Canadian bred horses.
Sweet Ducky had been scratched from a race at Keeneland because of licensing concerns earlier.
Which angel of fate would the owner’s nature and character bring for the colt would soon be revealed as the UAE Derby is not far away, and is the very first goal set for Maritimer.
