Ramzi Boukhiam and Garrett Parkes make the Round 2 cut at Vans World Cup of Surfing
Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam and Australia’s Garrett Parkes made the Round 2 (Round of 96) cut at the Vans World Cup of Surfing, second of three stops on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, after walking away with top honours from their respective Round 1 (Round
of 128) heats that went down at Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, on Tuesday, November 27, 2012.
Hawaii’s Gavin Gillette finished just behind Boukhiam in second place during the 13th heat to accompany the latter into the next round. Hawaii’s Joshua Moniz and Brazil’s Thiago Camarao finished in third and fourth place respectively, consequently
getting ejected from the contention for the event title.
The 14th heat saw France’s Marc Lacomare accompany Parkes to Round 2 after securing runner-up place. South Africa’s Shaun Joubert and Hawaii’s Flynn Novak were, however, forced to make a premature exit from the competition after rounding out the
bottom-two positions respectively.
With challenging surfing conditions prevailing at Sunset Beach, it was clear that the surfers needed to come up with something special to have a real chance of prevailing in their respective four-man battles.
Taking on Gillette, Moniz and Camarao in the 13th heat, Boukhiam put on a very fine show, adjusting pretty well to the double-overhead swell.
The Moroccan surfer locked his first business-wave to secure an 8.67 off it and went on to back it up with a 5.83-point ride, thus concluding the heat with a two-wave total of 14.50 points. The score remained unbeatable until the end to see him through to
victory.
Gillette successfully made the Round 2 cut as well after earning a 6.93 and 3.67 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 10.60 points.
Moniz finished third with a two-wave total of 9.60 points, while Camarao, who seemed pretty much out of rhythm throughout the entirety of the battle, ended up concluding the heat on a heat-total of 5.90 points.
The 14th heat saw Parkes getting the better of Lacomare, Joubert and Novak in a four-man battle for the Round 2 spot.
The Australian surfer collected a 7.17 off his first business-wave and eventually added an additional 5.40 points to his account, which carried him to a decisive heat-total of 12.57 points.
Lacomare finished in second place with a heat-total of 12.50 points, which included a 6.83 and 5.67-point ride.
Joubert and Novak rounded out the bottom-two positions after registering a heat-total of 10.10 and 4.66 points respectively, an effort that just was not good enough to keep them alive in the contention for the event title.
