Randall Bal clinches Men’s 100m backstroke gold: Day three - Santa Clara International Grand Prix
Randall Bal of New York Athletics clinched gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke on day three of the 2012 Santa Clara International Grand Prix in California on Sunday, June 3.
Santa Clara meet is of considerable importance as it paces the way for the 2012 London Olympic Games and allows the international players to compete with each other and improve their shortcomings before the mega event.
The 31-year-old Bal, who qualified in the playoff as top contender for gold medal, lived up to the expectations of his supporters by securing the title of the event.
With his impeccable pace, he faced no trouble in overpowering his challengers and secured the title of the event.
He went full rampant in the 100m discipline after the start and sprinted his way towards the other end of the pool with the timing of 27.33 seconds.
He was followed by Federico Grabich of Argentina, who stayed 0.15 seconds apart and concluded his initial half of the swim with the timing of 27.48 seconds.
Grabich was trailed by James A Lendrum of Trojan Swim Club, who stayed nearly half body length behind and emerged on the wall with an effort of 28.21 seconds.
Following that, the crowd witnessed gruelling efforts of Bal in the second lap of the event. Bal geared up his efforts in the final lap of the discipline and seized gold medal of the event with the timing of 56.03 seconds.
The champion was trailed by Grabich, who stayed 0.48 seconds behind and secured silver medal of the discipline by submitting a time of 56.51 seconds.
The silver medallist was followed by Lendrum, who remained nearly 0.65 seconds apart and transpired on the finishing wall for bronze medal with the timing of 57.19 seconds.
Similarly, fourth position of the discipline was secured by Nicholas Trowbridge of Palo Alto Stanford, who remained 0.11 seconds apart and surfaced on the finishing blockade with an effort of 57.30 seconds
In addition, the championship concluded after the completion of all planned events while the winners received medals at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
