Is it possible for people that dont have a social security number to open up a savings account and credit account??

  1. Most banks won't even let you open an account without a SSN unless you have a legit reason why you don't have a SSN. They usually will require it, and if you don't have it, they will tell you to get one, then come back to them.


  2. well... how come you don't have a SSN?! i thought you had to have one if you're a citizen...

    I'd say no, you can't do so, and if you do find one, you'll probably want to run a mile, as any decent reputable bank won't do it.

  3. Saving account - yes.  Credit account - doubtful.  

    Foreign students who come to this country can't legally work and can not obtain SSN but they are allowed to open bank accounts.  The bank will require 2 IDs, at least one with photo.

    Keep in mind a bank account without a valid SSN, the bank is required to withhold money from interest earned.

    You might be able to convince the same bank who opened the saving account to give you a credit account.
