Gold Can be hammered into extremely thin sheets called gold leaf. If 200 mg pieces of gold (density = 19.32 g/cm^3) is hammered into a sheet measuring 2.4 X 1.0 ft, what is the average thickness of the sheet in meters? How might the thickness be expressed without exponential notation, using an appropriate metric prefix?

  1. 0.200 g (200 mg) / 19.32 g/cm^3 = 0.01035 cm^3

    2.4 ft x 12 in/ft x 2.54 cm/in = 73.152 cm

    1.0 ft x 12 in/ft x 2.54 cm/in = 30.48 cm

    30.48 cm x 73.152 cm = 2229.7 cm^2

    X cm x 2229.7 cm^2 = 0.01035 cm^3

    X cm = 4.64x10^-6 cm thick

    4.64x10^-6 cm = 4.64x10^-8 m = 0.464x10^-9 m

    0.464 nanometers thick
