  1. tell you what try to Reduce Recycle Reuse what you have and then you may not have a need for the compactor once its in the landfill chances are it will never get recycled and that's were the waste is

  2. Trash compaction, including that done by garbage pick up trucks makes it impractical thereafter to separate various ingredients for recycling.

If we sent our garbage, uncompacted, to a central sorting area, we could segregate all kinds of materials... even if there is no current facility using it, we have a supply when we do find a use. If we never find a use, the mounting pile of unused material should trigger a review of what materials we are creating.

Now you as an individual may not have a choice of whether your garbage will be compactged by the truck on pickup. You likely have to lobby for the greener way with your fellow citizens and your city hall.

  3. Sure, they are good for the environment, if you're worried about wasting energy, turn a lamp off for an hour. That is probably about the equivalent of a trash compactor using energy.

  4. All they do is pack the trash into a heavy little lump, they dont eliminate any of it. You would be better off to recycle/compost which is actually good for the environment. Trash compactors just make it easier for the homeowner who doesnt like to take out trash often.
